Gum and Periodontal Health

Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease is normally caused by gum infections and can be treated with general dentistry procedures. Although the infection usually affects the soft tissues, it can spread to the bones and cause serious issues. Preventative measures like brushing and flossing daily can help you avoid the disease but if the infection worsens, restorative measures are required. Periodontal disease is classified in different forms namely:

Chronic gum disease

This is common in adults but it can occur at any age. It involves the recession of gums and may even lead to bone loss. The infection usually progresses slowly but there may be times it can progress rapidly.

Aggressive periodontal disease

Most people who suffer from aggressive gum disease have no underlying medical conditions. However, this type of infection spreads very fast and may lead to loss of bones just as quickly.

Necrotizing gum disease

These are usually signified by lesions, especially in people who have compromised immunity.

Gum disease as an indication of other systematic diseases

Sometimes the periodontal disease is associated with other conditions such as respiratory diseases and heart diseases. This form of gum disease starts at an early age and progresses as the patient grows.

Symptoms

  • Common symptoms to look out for include:
  • Inflamed, reddish or tender gums
  • Loose teeth or pain when chewing
  • Bad breath
  • Receding gums
  • Gums that bleed easily or formation of pus on the gums

Treatment

Treatment options usually differ depending on how bad the infection is but your dentist may recommend bad breath treatment or root canal treatment. The treatment options are usually meant to help the gums reattach to the teeth properly, reduce the rate at which the infection spreads, and stop the disease from spreading. You may, therefore, have to undergo several procedures for repairs depending on your health condition and the severity of the disease. Antibiotics may be issued for the infection and in extreme cases, the gum may have to be removed (gingivectomy).

Cosmetic procedures aren’t usually necessary in such conditions and you won’t have to use dentures either. However, you may undergo flap surgery.
